A list of all the mobile plan providers in NZ 2025.
Here in Aotearoa, we are lucky to have lots of mobile plan options from a range of telcos. It’s important to compare all the options available to you so that you can find the best deal for your unique mobile needs.Â
What is a Telco?
A telco, or a telecommunications company, is someone who provides cellular and mobile services to consumers. We have broken down the different telcos in New Zealand into different categories: networks providers, NVNOs, and other retailers.Â
Network Providers in New Zealand
A mobile network provider is a company that owns and operates the infrastructure that delivers cellular services.Â
There are three network providers in New Zealand, 2degrees, Spark, and One NZ, and they collectively provide mobile coverage to almost all of the places Kiwis live and work.Â
These companies are all also retailers, so they both own portions of the network and sell mobile phone plans.Â
2degrees
The newest of the mobile network providers in New Zealand, 2degrees launched on the scene in 2009 with the mission of fighting for fair. Along with the other network providers, 2degrees has announced the closing down of its 3G service by the end of 2025 as are the other Telco’s in NZ and will be further enhancing their 4G and 5G service. Recently 2degrees has announced a partnership with global satellite communications company AST SpaceMobile. We eagerly wait to see what this next giant leap in tech unfolds for Kiwis.
Spark
One of the earlier mobile network providers in New Zealand, the company dates back to 1987, and was previously known as Telecom. This household name has provided a range of telephone and cellular services, only growing since their rebranding to Spark. They now provide 4G/5G coverage, reaching 98% of the country.
One NZ
Previously known as Vodafone, One NZ has had a long standing presence in New Zealand. They provide 4G and 5G services in parts of cities and towns across the country, reaching 99% of places where Kiwis live and work.Â
MVNOs in New Zealand
MVNO stands for Mobile Virtual Network Operator, and it is a company that leases parts of the mobile network infrastructure so that they can provide their own mobile services – such as calls, texts, and data – to consumers. So, they don’t own and operate the network infrastructure like network providers, but they can lease parts of it to offer services under their own brand.Â
There are many reasons why MVNOs benefit Kiwis, and the telcos market in New Zealand. MVNOs can offer flexibility and cost-effective plans that make it a little bit easier for Kiwis to get connected during this cost of living crisis. The barrier to entry is decreasing, making it easier for new providers to enter the market and create more competition through innovation and by offering niche services, specialised plans, and competitive pricing. MVNOs can focus and hit a wide range of mobile needs and therefore, can be great for those seeking personalised and budget-friendly services.Â
In Aotearoa as of 2025, we have 10 MVNOs.Â
